Because this is a hardcore experience, the game tracks your total deaths across all stages. If you lose your third life, the game resets entirely, deleting your progress and requiring you to start from the very first level. This creates a reason to retry and perfect your movement, as mastering the early stages ensures you have enough lives left for the more difficult sections later on.

Short sessions are the hallmark of this adventure. Each level requires you to collect every piece of obsidian scattered across the environment. Once you have gathered all the pieces, a black hole opens up. You must enter this black hole to reach a cave, which then leads to the final portal for that stage. The challenge lies in the placement of the green monsters. You cannot simply run past them; you must actively engage with them or find ways to bypass them safely. Jumping on top of a monster is the only way to crush and remove it from your path.

As you progress, the levels become more complex, requiring better timing and more precise jumps. The lack of a save system means that your skill is the only thing that carries you forward. You will find yourself replaying the initial levels to find the most efficient routes and the safest ways to deal with enemies. This repetition helps you learn the layout of the platforms and the movement patterns of the monsters, making each subsequent run more successful than the last.

Safety is paramount because of the three-death limit. You must weigh the risk of going after a difficult obsidian piece against the potential loss of a life. If you are on your last life, your playstyle will likely become more cautious. The game encourages this shift in strategy, rewarding players who take the time to plan their jumps and wait for the right moment to strike at enemies. Reaching the portal safely is the only way to advance, making every successful level feel like a significant achievement in your hardcore run.
