Akihiko vs Cannons places you in the role of Akihiko, a character navigating a series of 2D environments filled with mechanical hazards and environmental traps. The primary objective involves collecting every Gold Bar scattered across the terrain to activate the yellow flag, which serves as the exit to the subsequent area. This journey spans eight distinct levels, each introducing a higher degree of difficulty and more complex placement of obstacles. You begin the game with a total of six lives, which must be managed carefully to reach the final stage.

Beginners often struggle with the timing of the Cannon bots and their projectiles. These stationary and mobile enemies fire bullets at regular intervals, requiring precise jumps to avoid contact. Miscalculating the distance of a jump or failing to account for the trajectory of a bullet results in the loss of a life. The presence of spikes on the floor and walls adds another layer of danger, as any contact with these sharp hazards is immediate. Success depends on observing the movement patterns of the flying Cannon Bots and finding the right window to move past them while grabbing the necessary Gold Bars.

Movement is handled through standard directional inputs, allowing for horizontal traversal and jumping. A critical mechanic for navigating the larger gaps and higher platforms is the double jump. By executing a second jump while already in the air, Akihiko can reach Gold Bars that are positioned out of the range of a standard leap. This ability is also essential for clearing wide spike pits or bypassing Cannon bots that guard narrow corridors. As the levels progress, the placement of these hazards becomes more crowded, demanding tighter control and better anticipation of enemy fire.

Each session of Akihiko vs Cannons starts fresh, meaning that progress through the eight levels does not carry over between different play sessions. This structure encourages players to master the early stages to preserve their six lives for the more challenging later levels.
