Abyssal Fish centers on the mechanic of memorizing obstacles in total darkness. You take control of a large, predatory fish navigating the absolute silence of the seabed. The environment is shrouded in darkness, making visibility your primary challenge. To survive, you must rely on the brief moments of illumination provided by bright fishes that cross your path. The core gameplay involves hunting for food while avoiding the many dangers hidden in the dark. As a large creature of the abyss, you are constantly hungry, and your goal is to catch and eat smaller fish. However, these smaller fish are quick and will attempt to flee as you approach. Steering your large frame through narrow passages and around jagged rocks requires precise control and a keen sense of spatial awareness. The darkness hides obstacles that can end your hunt prematurely if you are not careful.

Progressing through the waters requires you to collect bonuses and specific delicious fish that appear throughout the seabed. These items are often placed in risky locations, forcing you to choose between safety and sustenance.
