2048
2048
2048 is a logic-driven number puzzle that requires careful spatial planning and precise movement. The game is played on a 4x4 grid where numbered tiles appear and move in four directions. Every time you slide the tiles, a new tile with a value of 2 or 4 enters an empty spot on the board. Your objective is to manipulate these tiles so that matching numbers collide and merge into a single tile with their combined value. This process continues as you work toward the ultimate goal of creating a tile with the number 2048.
The challenge lies in the limited space of the grid. Because every move introduces a new tile, the board can fill up quickly if you do not merge tiles efficiently. Strategic positioning is essential; keeping your highest-value tiles in a corner or along an edge is a common approach to maintain board organization. If the grid fills up completely and no more legal moves are possible—meaning no adjacent tiles share the same value—the session ends. Success requires thinking several moves ahead to ensure you don't trap smaller numbers behind larger ones.
This version of the game is an open-source project originally created by Gabriele Cirulli. It focuses entirely on the core mechanics of the sliding puzzle genre, offering a clean and distraction-free environment for mental exercise. Each session starts fresh, providing a new opportunity to refine your movement patterns and reach higher tile values. The simplicity of the interface allows you to focus entirely on the mathematical progression and the spatial logic required to keep the grid clear while building toward the winning tile.

Features
- Classic 4x4 grid layout
- Strategic tile merging mechanics
- Open-source puzzle design
- Clean distraction-free interface
How to Play
To begin, use the arrow keys on your keyboard or swipe your finger on a touchscreen to move all tiles on the grid simultaneously. When two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into one tile with a value equal to the sum of the two. For example, two tiles marked with 2 will become a 4, and two 4s will become an 8.
Every move you make causes a new tile to appear in a random empty spot on the board. You must manage the limited 4x4 space carefully to prevent the grid from becoming cluttered. If the board fills up and you cannot make any more merges, the game is over. Your primary objective is to continue merging tiles until you successfully create the 2048 tile.
Strategy is key to reaching high numbers. Most players find success by keeping their largest tile in a corner and building other large tiles around it. This prevents smaller, new tiles from getting trapped in the middle of the board where they are harder to merge. Each move should be calculated to maximize merging opportunities while keeping the grid as open as possible.

Tips & Tricks
- Keep your highest-value tile in one of the four corners to maximize space
- Try to move tiles in only three directions to keep the board organized
- Always look for potential merges before making a move that fills an empty slot
- Avoid placing small numbers like 2 or 4 between your larger tiles
